Our March Member's Session .....

.....showed the range of interests of members, from Paula Ferris' videos of microscopic marine life, to Jay Nicholson's trip to the South Atlantic to see Penguins, and to citizen science contribution to national databases.

Traditionally the last session of each programme is for members to gives short talks, and Paula assembled clips from her video records of watching planctonic marine life down a microscope.

Bideford and River Torridge Heritage Harbour.....

..............as a going concern is gaining momentum, according to Mike Teare, of the Way of the Wharves and Bideford and Torridge Heritage Harbour.

BTHH comprises a number of areas of interest  reflecting the long history of the Bideford area, including being one of England's main ports centuries ago.

There are heritage vessels, museums and self-guided walks to enjoy, and Mike outlined some, including the history and ecology of the river.

Invaders, but not from another planet.............

............are monitored by the Marine Biological Association to assess the speed and extent of travel and the likely effect on the local environmet.
John Bishop and Chris wood are the core of the team which carries out Rapid Assessment Surveys (RAS), which provide a quick but systematic insight into a location such as a marina, and which provide the basis of the available data on extent of invasive species.

If Sue Sayer is good enough for the King........

..............she's good enough for Coastwise members.
Sue is the passionate leader of the Cornwall Seal Group, who was recently honoured with an MBE for her work, and gave a talk on the Trust's work in which Coastwise members were given a privileged film insight of her investiture.
The group is devoted to learning more about seals and their lives by building up an identity bank based on the marking on the fur.
