Life in the Future.......

......and we don't mean just after Covid-19.
Harry Barton of the Devon Wildlife Trust gave Coastwise members his view on the future of marine conservation and wildlife when we've left the EU.

He outlined the disastrous drop in wildlife in the seas over the last century, and the start of measure to remedy it with several forms of marine protection.

One the of the major, but unrecognised forms of marine pollution is an estimated 3M Te of soil runoff per annum from the land, contanining sediment and residues of agrochemicals.

High Seas Drifters.......

........also known as plankton, an important part of our marine ecosystem.

A real expert, Dr Dave Conway of the Marine Biological Association gave Coastwise members a guided tour of the plankton world, touching on the wide variety of species and their sometimes wierd and wonderful appearance, parasitic forms, and the way that surveying their presence and populations is providing clues on how the oceans are changing.

All Change.....

......to a different way of living.

That was Mark Ward's message to Coastwise members when he talked about climate change and the effect it's having on our world.

Mark's day job is with the Somerset Wildlife Trust, and he's also a member of the Somerset Climate Action Group and Extinction Rebellion.

His talk was delivered to the already converted for the most part, and he outlined the science that indicates that although large swings in climate have always happened to the world, the changes over the industrialised period are almost certainly due to human activities.
