Farming without any land......

......is the objective of new venture Algapelago (www.algapelago.com), which is aiming to turn Bideford Bay into a productive seaweed farm.

Seaweed is increasingly becoming recognised as a major resource, not just for its contents, used for food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, but also as a way of sequestering carbon from the atmosphere.

Algapelago's Olly Hicks outlined the world market for seaweed, approx. 35MTe pa at the moment with 97% in the Far East.

Water Quality affects everybody.....

.........in one way or another, as Jack Middleton of the Southwest Rivers Trust told Coastwise members.

The Trust, which has an office at Launceston, but with many staff working from elsewhere, has groups for river management, land management, evidence and engagement, coomunications and marketing and administration.

It is the largest and longest-standing rivers trust in the UK, and the sheer scale of drainage patterns in the region is huge, reflected in the complicated drainage pattern for North Devon (Pictured R, 2nd from Top).

Jurassic Calamari - A Trendy New Fish Restaurant........?

....not at all !
In fact it's Professor Malcolm Hart's title of a very interesting talk on his work about how these cephalopods (Artist's impression R, 2nd from top)  from approximately 160MYA have been found and are being related to modern examples after evolution.

With the erosion of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, new examples are being found constantly, leading to changed understanding of the world at that time.

Maritime Museum Records Raided.....

...............by volunteer Martin Corfe to reveal local artist V C Boyle's paintings and writings.

Martin has trawled North Devon Maritime Museum's archives to find all existing items of the Bideford-born artist's work. Martin has been digitising the work as there has been some deterioration in condition over the years, and sensitive image editing has allowed them to be preserved in an accessible form.

It should be Harbour Mistress....

......as the title for IlfracombeHarbour Master Captain Georgina Carlo-Paat MBE, who impressed her Coastwise audience with her determination to get to the peak of her chosen profession in the merchanr fleet.

She has worked her way up the industry from casual ship's cook to Master Mariner over the years, accumulating a very diverse range of sea-going experience from the Mediterranean via the Caribbean to the Antarctic, with UK dredging thrown in along the way, and gaining her theoretical qualifications from spells at Fleetwood College, where she later worked as a lecturer.
