More work to do around our Devon Coasts.....

.....as Coral Smith, from the DWT, showed Coastwise members during her talk pulling together data from three groups of marine surveyors.

Shoresearch methodologies have been followed by Coastwise, the DWT and Shores of South Devon, another marine enthusiast group similar to Coastwise. Data has been uploaded to iRecord, and Coral undertook some analysis to show up similarities and differences.

First of all, she outlined the different types of survey, and the route to validation of the data on iRecord.

Birding at Velator......

..........was blessed with decent weather for a good contingent of Coastwise members, with guiding and spotting by resident expert Rob Jutsum.

Over 40 species were spotted, along with plenty of other wildlife on either side of the dyke path out to the White House.

A good morning out in lovely surroundings.

Under Devon's Seas.......

...................with Mags Ashton, an expert SCUBA diver and photographer, and an old friend of Coastwise.

Mags talked members through her usual dazzling pictures of marine life from a number of wrecks and reefs offshore North Devon, such as off Big Hangman, Eastaway Rock off Mortehoe, the Stan Woolaway off Bull Point, and around the coast of Lundy.

Lovely pictures, which provoked lively discussion from members.

A few examples are shown here, courtesy of Mags Ashton.

It's Autumn ! Coastwise's New Programme Starts Soon.....

........as it launches its latest ambitious programme of talks and activities about the coast and its wildlife on 12  October, in Barnstaple Library, with exceptional photographs from diver Maggs Ashton, including the rare Sunset Cup Coral at Lundy.  This is the first of ten weekly Thursday morning meetings of talks and local site visits.
