On 20th September members of Coastwise and the British Naturalist's Trust visited Barricane Beach to update the species survey. Among the many specimens noted were a Conger Eel, a young Lobster, and a Brittle Star.
On 10th September, 33 Coastwise members visited the National Marine Aquarium, which is situated next to Sutton Dock in Plymouth. We travelled very comfortably by coach, and had the additional benefit of fantastic weather that allowed a pleasant look round the dock and Hoe after the visit.
Members were given conducted tours of the Aquarium by marine biologists from the staff, and also a look behind the scenes to get a feel for the care that that is lavished on the exhibits.
By general agreement, this was a great day out.
Award-winning Coastwise launches a super new autumn programme with a display in Barnstaple Library , 15 - 22 August. The photograph shows Paula Ferris putting the finishing touches to the display of 48 photographs, mainly by Rob Jutsum, of North Devon marine animals, birds, and plants.
On 24th July, 11 Coastwise members had a great time at Tunnels Beach doing a 2009 update of the marine life for the Beach Survey on the website.
In spite of a slightly iffy weather forecast, the sun shone on us and some fascinating new finds were made at low tide level.
Coastwise North Devon has been awarded two prestigious awards by the North Devon Conservation Society for work on coastal education, conservation, research and campaigning for the marine environment: The President's Shield, and the North Devon AONB Coastal Award for the Natural Environment.
