One of Dr Tara Hooper's slides in her talk to Coastwise showed a yellow and black box carrying the message "Warning - Abbreviations and Jargon Ahead". Members need not have worried, because although this is indeed an area full of Jargon, Tara skillfully built up a layman's picture of this potentially important topic.
Naturalist and photographer Martin Batt bailed out of a career in banking consultancy and environmental consultancy. After work with the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust he became the project manager for the Living Islands Initiative, whose objective was to test the economic potential for tourism on Alderney of wildlife and heritage.
As part of his talk he also drew parallels between Alderney and North Devon on both economic and wildlife fronts, starting from the premise that both are relatively unknown !
The Cephalobod in question is John Rundle (Top R, being attacked by a balloon model), now retired from the Marine Biological Association where he was for many years Head Aquarist, and expert on Cephalopodes, i.e. squid, octopus, nautilus and cuttlefish.
Despite being retired and having time to come and talk to Coastwise, John still returns to the MBA to lecture.
